Impacts of reforestation on soil and soil organic carbon losses

چکیده

ABSTRACT Water erosion is a serious environmental problem that causes soil degradation, compromises its fertility and organic carbon (SOC) losses. Reforestation, encouraged by Brazilian legislation, way to reduce water erosion. However, in tropical subtropical regions, there little information on the impact of reforestation loss rates SOC. Therefore, this study aimed apply Erosion Potential Method, combined with multitemporal data from samples collected situ, estimate spatialize SOC losses predominantly agricultural watershed showed high period studied 2011 2019. The determination EPM parameters was carried out aid Geographic Information System validated hydrosedimentological collection station. results between 2019 reduced 27.5%, while were 32.7%. Among evaluated crops, corn highest losses, coffee forest areas exhibited lowest rates. Reforestation basin main factor responsible for reduction This process initiated seeking meet requirements Forest Code, which highlights positive role public policies can play conservation when respected well applied.

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

Soil and soil organic carbon redistribution on the landscape

Patterns of soil organic carbon (SOC) vary widely across the landscape leading to large uncertainties in the SOC budget especially for agricultural landscapes where water, tillage and wind erosion redistributes soil and SOC across the landscape. It is often assumed that soil erosion results in a loss of SOC from the agricultural ecosystem but recent studies indicate that soil erosion and its su...

Soil organic carbon dynamics jointly controlled by climate, carbon inputs, soil properties and soil carbon fractions.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are regulated by the complex interplay of climatic, edaphic and biotic conditions. However, the interrelation of SOC and these drivers and their potential connection networks are rarely assessed quantitatively. Using observations of SOC dynamics with detailed soil properties from 90 field trials at 28 sites under different agroecosystems across the Australian ...

Urban Tree Effects on Soil Organic Carbon

Urban trees sequester carbon into biomass and provide many ecosystem service benefits aboveground leading to worldwide tree planting schemes. Since soils hold ∼75% of ecosystem organic carbon, understanding the effect of urban trees on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil properties that underpin belowground ecosystem services is vital. We use an observational study to investigate effects of thre...

Understanding the Impacts of Soil, Climate, and Farming Practices on Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration: A Simulation Study in Australia

Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils has the capacity to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to improve soil biological, physical, and chemical properties. The review of literature pertaining to soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics within Australian grain farming systems does not enable us to conclude on the best farming practices to increase or maintain SOC for a specific combina...
